Ezetimibe
Ezetimibe inhibits absorption of biliary and dietary cholesterol across the intestinal wall. The main effect is to lower LDL-C levels. Its current place in therapy is as an alternative to other nonstatin drugs in people unable to take a statin due to contraindications or statin-related adverse effects. Ezetimibe can be given in combination with a statin if cholesterol levels are inadequately controlled on the statin alone. It should not be used in combination with fibrates until further information on safety and effectiveness becomes available. If given in combination with bile acids, it should be taken at least 1 hour before, or 4 to 6 hours after, the resin to minimise the potential for the resin to decrease ezetimibe absorption. Common adverse effects include headache and diarrhoea. Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of myopathy—ask patients to report muscle pain, weakness or tenderness
