Opioids |
Opioid analgesics are used for the treatment of severe pain, diminishing both the sensation and the affective response to pain. Safe use requires knowledge of available opioids, their relative indications, formulations and routes of administration, and awareness of potential adverse effects and how to manage these. Opioids may be prescribed for acute traumatic or postoperative pain, for chronic cancer-related pain and, in some circumstances, for severe chronic noncancer pain. The long-term use of opioids in palliative care differs in several ways from use in other situations. See Opioids in the Palliative Care guidelines for information on the long-term use of opioids in the palliative care setting.
