The musculoskeletal system comprises the bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles. The main function of the musculoskeletal system is to support the body and protect the body’s organs.
The hard surface of bones gives protection to the creation of blood cells. Inside the sturdy, outer layers of bones, such as the thigh, hip and breastbones, lies the red marrow. The red marrow is the wellspring of the circulatory system and the source of white and other blood cells that circulate throughout the body.
The precursors of these circulating cells are known as stem cells. Stem cells divide to form other immune-responsive cells such as granulocytes, monocytes and lymphocytes.
